Flowers

Lots of plants are in bloom here, especially the clump of day lilies which grows behind the dining room window. These all came originally from our neighbor, who is a breeder of day lilies. I think we (the royal we, which means Gwen) had to transplant them after we bought the house from the front (which was shady and not fully out from under the eaves) to the sunny back. They are thriving. Several different colors. Gwen likes the yellow one the best. Here are a few .. more pictures (and all full size, downloadable, and orderable for prints) are in the June gallery at http://picasaweb.google.com/axtell.mj/June2010#

Had a fun weekend. Saturday was a lab picnic to say farewell to a visiting scholar from Malaysia who's been visiting in my lab the last 6 weeks. The USA loss to Ghana was disappointing, but we had a good run. My first Ph.D. student was from Ghana, so he's happy, and now I'm rooting for them to go further in the tournament.

In work matters, will be crunch time for a grant deadline on July 12. Hoping to finish up on July 9 (or maybe before?). Always stressful, and tedious.

Hope you're all well..

Father's Day

We had a great Father's day this year. It was a beautiful warm and sunny day. After a few presents in the morning. Mike and Jeffrey went to the pool. Meredith and I had a nice morning, its easy with one kid! Jeffrey and I decorated a chocolate cake from Wegmans for Mike. Jeffrey had a great time and dumped all the sprinkles in one corner (he gave up the 'sprinkling' technique), then we squeezed blue frosting swirls and gently placed a sugar surfboard and smiley face. (Wegmans sold decorating cake kits this year! Great idea!)

Picnic dinner and yummy cake for dessert!

Meredith is sad she can't eat cake yet. But she loves her daddy!

after-dinner fun

Tonight was great weather and everyone went outside after dinner. Jeffrey really likes to play with his dump trucks underneath the linden tree -- he calls it his 'road'

Meredith was happy too -- lots of smiling!

Jeffrey started his new pre-school this week and is happy to be going. They have big red tricycles and an outdoor playground so how could he not be happy?!

The other big breakthrough is that, suddenly, Jeffrey has expanded his eating habits beyond just the few types of food that he has eaten for more than a year. Just in a week he decided that he likes tacos, green salad with carrots and ranch dressing, and ham sandwiches! So great to see him start to pull out of the extreme pickiness about food.

Swing!

This weekend's main activity was assembling and installing a swingset for the kids. Jeffrey is just getting old enough to control a real swing on his own, and Meredith will be ready for a baby swing by late summer to fall. Gwen researched it and found a Kettler model we both liked. Kettler is a German company. We have a tricycle from them and we like it a lot. I'm partial to it because its a German export of a product they sell in Germany as well, and so it meets the German safety standards, which I'm sure are stricter than ours. Plus, it's bright red!

Gwen helped me with the first bit of the assembly, which required some lifting and holding by her while I put in bolts. A challenge, but not too bad. Next, dig some holes for the supports. Only required 45cm deep (German product here folks, metric!) but sweaty work; it was really humid and hot here Saturday afternoon when I was digging.

After digging, it was time to install the support feet on the bottom, which were basically 20cm steel legs on a pivot. I messed with these until the set was as close to level as reasonably achievable.

After dinner, it was time to mix up the quickcrete .. 2 80lb bags. No pictures. Man, that stuff is heavy! I basically piled the concrete into the holes, surrounding the supports with a pyramid of concrete, and the let it dry overnight. The next morning, Jeffrey "helped" me fill in the rest of the hole with dirt and cover it with sod. Here he is with his chair and dump trucks, 'helping'.

Once that was done, Jeffrey 'helped' me screw in the two regular swings. Once the first one was safe, he got right on! Here is the video (2:53 .. too lazy to edit..)

Of course, Jeffrey then wanted to actually WATCH the video:

Finally, I installed the baby swing for Meredith. She is too little right now for it, but the way she is growing, it will be soon. In the short video of Jeffrey (0:09) you can see the baby swing (as well as the fact the Jeffrey has lost his boot!).

Meredith smiling

Hi all. In the last week or so, Meredith has begun to smile a little bit! She only does it briefly, so it's hard to get in a picture. Here's the best pic we have of her smiling yet:

From June 2010

Gwen thinks she went through a growth spurt last week or so. For a while she was extremely fussy for several hours at night. Now she's calmed down a bit and at the same time seems more alert, smiles, and sometimes makes some 'cooing' noises. We think her brain got wired up a little bit more during the spurt. She's also gaining weight like a champ. She's noticeably chubbier now vs. a few weeks ago and looks pretty long too. She hasn't been weighed in a while (that I know of), but if we get any new info I'll post it.

From June 2010

Here's Gwen using her 'Moby wrap', which really does seem to work well for both Mom and Meredith. Especially now that we're in a bit of cooler weather.

From June 2010

Jeffrey is out of regular pre-school for the summer now. He hasn't really asked why he stopped going (at least to me, maybe he's been asking Gwen). He will start going to a different pre-school next week, twice a week. Our regular place doesn't have a summer program. Jeffrey will love it and I'm not worried about him being anxious with a new batch of kids. Here is Jeffrey and Meredith together on the couch:

And the last one, Jeffrey acting nutty. He kept claiming he was an ant and curling up my desk and giggling (and covering himself with that heart blanket). What a nut.

Memorial Day

Had a busy Memorial Day weekend. It started with the usual (mowing the lawn), then followed the good stuff. We have a tetherball post in the backyard left over from the original owners of the house. For years now we have left it alone but the time has come to get rid of it. Gwen had somehow met up with the original owner of our house, who told her that the post was going to be hard to dig out. But how hard could it be? Well, Jeffrey and I found out. I dug and dug but never found the bottom of the concrete plug into which the metal post was embedded. After reaching around 4 feet deep, it was starting to move back and forth pretty good, but I still could not see the bottom. At that point it was clear that, even if I did eventually dig to the bottom, there was no way I could lift that amount of concrete out of the hole. Defeated, I bought myself a concrete chisel and smashed away the top two inches or so of the concrete, then just amputated the pole with a hacksaw, and covered the concrete with soil and grass seed. It was a sweaty morning for me but Jeffrey had fun playing in the dirt pile with his bulldozer.

Other activities were more fun. We've had an old hammock from Cambridge in the garage for a while but never put it up -- the distance between the pine trees in the back is a little too far. So, I finally got a hammock stand and put it up in the back yard. Best purchase this year. Jeffrey loves it too.

Meredith fell asleep in her stroller yesterday and Gwen wheeled her out and Gwen took a hammock nap. (Sorry I failed to get a picture of that one). We also went to a friend's house for a BBQ on Memorial. There were two other 3 year old boys, and two other infants. It was a lot of fun and Jeffrey got to stay up way past his bedtime.
