When I said updates will be slow in trickling out, I meant it, huh!
Anyway, the vegetable garden that Jeffrey and I planted mostly in April is doing pretty good. The spinach and radishes were done long ago, but the lettuce just keeps on coming. We've been eating almost entirely fresh lettuce for over a month now. We also had a volunteer pumpkin seedling sprout, probably from last-year's jack-o-lantern which was in the compost that I spread in March. Gwen let it live and it's going nuts, kind of taking over the beans and making at least one big pumpkin. The beans still are making huge amounts (of beans) though. Also, the snow peas have been hard to keep up with.
My giant sunflower project was a little delayed in planting and critters are most of the seedlings (or seeds) -- only one survivor but it is starting to take off now. Gwen bought me a seedling of another giant variety (hers is 'monster', my preferred is 'mammoth') so we'll see who wins there.
In pre-school in the spring Jeffrey's class planted marigold seeds in a dixie cup of soil and watched them sprout. We took Jeffrey's home and when they got big enough transplanted them to the garden. They are flowering now and that is pretty neat for Jeffrey to see.
The border area around the Deck (perennials, all Gwen's efforts there) also looks nice though the recent dry and hot weather is taking it's toll.
On July 3 I got out there and harvested all the carrots, and a bunch of beans and peas. Here's some pics of the bounty. Full size images at
